D.O. MONTSANT
The wine region of Montsant (D.O. Montsant) is located in the province
of Tarragona and passes around the D.O. Priorat. Between its more outstanding
towns we found: Falset, Marçà, Capçanes, Cormudella
del Montsant, El Masroig and La Bisbal de Falset among others.
The D.O. Montsant is a new wine area recognised in August 2001, before
this, this zone was a part of the D.O. Tarragona-Falset subsection,
but due to the special characteristics of the ground, climate and wines, it
was able to create a new denomination of origin. But those wines can only
take refuge in the D.O. Montsant whose vintage was made as of year
2000. This means that all those wines of the Montsant zone, of harvests
previous to the year 2000 will have to take in their labels the D.O.
Tarragona-Falset subsection.
The cultivated lands of Montsant are poor, from quaternary origin and formed
by a large quantity of stone and slate. The vineyards located in the valley
of Falset are influenced of the "garbinada" (Southwest humid wind)
that modifies the characteristics of a dry climate.
In our property located in the D.O. Montsant "Masia Esplanes",
the stocks do not support productions superior to the 2 kg of grape,
the ground is ploughed without pesticides, instead of treating with sulphates
and sulfurs, obtaining year after year a better quality of wine already recognised
on world-wide level.
In the property Masia Esplanes we combined Garnatxa and Carinyena
with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah to elaborate marks
MASIA ESPLANES, VESSANTS and ROIGENC.
